What Drops yarn group B means
Drops divides all its yarns into groups A to F by thickness. Group A is the thinnest and F the thickest. You recognise the group by the number of stitches that fit in 10 cm of fabric: the more stitches, the thinner the yarn. Drops Sky belongs to group B, a medium-weight yarn (20–22 stitches per 10 cm, 8 ply / DK). It is the most versatile weight. It knits faster than group A and suits sweaters, cardigans, hats, scarves and blankets.
Yarns from the same group can be swapped in Drops patterns. Yardage differs between yarns, so always recalculate the number of balls and knit a test swatch.
Overview of the most common groups:
| Group | Stitches per 10 cm | Thickness | Needles |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 23–26 | from fine lace (2 ply) through fingering (4 ply) to sport (5 ply) | 3–3.5 mm |
| B (this yarn) | 20–22 | 8 ply, DK / worsted | 4 mm |
| C | 16–19 | 10 ply, aran / worsted | 5 mm |
Groups D to F are even heavier yarns and are not listed here.
Yarn features
- lightweight, breathable yarn with a tubular structure
- very soft thanks to baby alpaca
- strength comes from the polyamide
What to make with it
Drops Sky is suitable for large projects such as blankets, ponchos, cardigans and sweaters, as well as warm accessories like scarves and hats. A plain stocking stitch shows off its texture nicely, and textured patterns and cables also come out well.
Caring for the finished piece
Hand wash at max. 30 °C, separately, with a wool detergent free of enzymes and optical brighteners. Dry flat, do not tumble dry.
Frequently asked questions about Drops Sky
What is Drops Sky made of and how many metres does one ball have?
Drops Sky is made of 74% baby alpaca, 18% polyamide, 8% merino wool. One ball weighs 50 g and has approx. 190 m.
Which needles and what tension should I use?
Drops recommends 4 mm needles. A 10 × 10 cm swatch corresponds to 21 stitches × 28 rows. Always knit a swatch first, because it is the basis for the accuracy of the pattern.
How many balls do I need for my project?
The pattern you follow tells you. Divide the yardage in the pattern by 190 m, which is the yardage of one ball of Drops Sky, and round up. For bigger projects buy all balls at once.
How do I care for Drops Sky?
First consider simply airing the garment. If washing is necessary, hand wash at max. 30 °C, separately, with a wool detergent without enzymes and optical brighteners. Do not soak, rub or wring; rinse in water of the same temperature and gently press out excess water in a dry towel or spin lightly (approx. 800 rpm without filling with water). Dry flat, away from direct sun, and do not tumble dry.
Is Drops Sky feltable?
Yes, Drops lists it as feltable, so wash it only according to the care instructions. Felting makes the swatch denser; Drops gives the tension before and after felting on the yarn page.
Is Drops Sky superwash?
No. The yarn is not superwash, so it must not be machine washed on a normal cycle.
Is the yarn suitable for children’s items?
The yarn has Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 class I certificate no. 25.3.0040 (Innovatext, Hungary). Class I is the strictest and marks textiles suitable for products for children up to 3 years.
Will the colour cocoa brown look the same on the ball as on my screen?
Colours differ slightly between screens and may also vary slightly between dye lots. The lot number is on the label. For a bigger project buy all balls from the same dye lot.
What does it mean that the yarn is in group B?
Drops sorts yarns into groups A to F by thickness. Group B means 20–22 stitches per 10 cm and 4 mm needles; it is a medium-weight yarn. Yarns from the same group can be swapped in Drops patterns.
Can I replace it with another yarn?
Yes, yarns from the same group (B) have a similar tension and can be swapped in patterns. The yardage differs, so always recalculate the number of balls and knit a test swatch.
Note: colours may look slightly different on different screens, and shades may vary slightly between dye lots.
