DMC: a brand with its own history and yarn for Harry Potter fans
The DMC brand dates back to 1746 in Mulhouse, France, where Jean-Henri Dollfus founded the textile business. The company Dollfus-Mieg et Compagnie, which gave DMC its name, was formed in 1800. From 1841 it became famous for sewing thread, and later for embroidery cotton. Its reputation was helped by Thérèse de Dillmont's famous Encyclopedia of Needlework of 1886, which the company supported. Today DMC offers embroidery and knitting materials, crochet kits and yarns for creative projects.
What we offer from DMC
We currently offer the self-striping yarn DMC Harry Potter Magic, from which one 300 g ball (410 m) makes a scarf in the colours of the Hogwarts house Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin. The stripe colours change on their own, so you never switch yarns or weave in ends.
What you can make with DMC Harry Potter Magic
- Scarf: one ball makes a whole scarf following the pattern on the label.
- Hat or cowl: a second ball in the same colourway makes a set.
- Gift for fans: a scarf in house colours is a lovely present for Christmas or a birthday.
- Costume or fancy dress: a house scarf completes a wizard's outfit.
Yardage and care
One ball (100% acrylic, 300 g, 410 m) makes one scarf, with 6 mm needles recommended. We recommend machine washing the acrylic yarn at 30 °C, no ironing, no tumble drying, no bleaching, and drying flat.
The houses at a glance
Gryffindor (burgundy and golden yellow) is the house of courage with the lion as its symbol, Ravenclaw (blue and white) is the house of wit with the eagle, Hufflepuff (yellow and black) is the house of loyalty with the badger, and Slytherin (green and silver-grey) is the house of ambition with the snake. If you are not sure where you belong, start with the colours you like best.
Film, book and Harry Potter in the Czech Republic
The first book was published in the UK in 1997, and its film adaptation Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, directed by Chris Columbus, premiered in November 2001. In 2026 we therefore mark 25 years since the first film. The first Czech edition of the book was published by Albatros in 2000 in a print run of about 7,000 copies, and well-kept copies now sell for tens of thousands of crowns. This year fans can also visit Harry Potter: The Exhibition at PVA Expo Praha in Letňany, which according to the organisers runs from 6 August 2026 to 21 March 2027.
